Open Call: Operational Committee Member

It’s that time again - Generator is looking to expand its operational committee in September! Come and work with us!

Generator is an artist-led space in Dundee, where our committee members work hard to deliver a varied contemporary art programme showcasing the work of emerging artists. We are dedicated to the development of Dundee’s creative sector and to providing paid opportunities for creative practitioners working and living locally.

Operational committee members are responsible for all aspects of the day-to-day running of the exhibition space and events and exhibition programming. Committee members serve for a maximum of two years, ensuring a fresh and dynamic approach - it is expected that committee members will commit to this timescale to the best of their ability. We run in a non-hierarchical manner, with a firm commitment to practices of openness, democracy, care and mutual support both among ourselves as a committee and with our artists and audiences.

Please note that the operational committee roles are currently unpaid, though we have recently changed our governance structure and implemented a Board of Trustees, and are actively seeking additional funding to begin paying the operational committee a stipend in accordance with Fair Work guidance. We can’t guarantee when this will come in, but it is in the pipeline! Operational committee members are currently entitled to a studio space and may claim for some professional development costs (residencies, courses, research trips, etc.) through our Incubator Fund.

The committee holds meetings every Monday evening, with an expected commitment of 8 hours of work per week, although this time can vary significantly depending on programme activity.  At this time, we can only accept applications from people based in Dundee or the surrounding area, as a lot of on-site working is required.

We would encourage practising artists (broadly construed) to apply for this role, but there are no specific qualifications necessary, and we welcome applications from those outside of formal arts training. We do, however, highlight the importance of flexibility, motivation and passion for contemporary art practice and programming. Our success depends on maintaining an environment of support, as we work together in a nonhierarchical manner to ensure all of our voices are heard and appreciated. Please don’t only apply because you fancy a free studio space - this is a role that requires genuine commitment.

Applications from all backgrounds are welcomed and we actively encourage applications from communities under-represented in the art sector. We are working towards increased diversity within the Generator committee and so will prioritise applications from people of colour, those from a lower socio-economic background, neurodiverse people, people with disabilities and members of the LGBTQI+ community when making our decision. Although applicants must be over 18 and not in full-time education, there is no age cap on this role.

This role is unavailable to students; however, we encourage you to apply for the Associate Committee. For more information, see: www.generatorprojects.co.uk/get-involved

If you applied last time and are still interested, you don’t need to resubmit a whole application unless you have new things to add - just let us know you would like to be reconsidered.
