Dear Citizen,

The Ministry of SOP invite you to participate in a new phase in the evolution of the State. Three events that further explores the notion of contested spaces...

The STATE OF PRINT will be established at Generator Projects from the 23rd March to 14th April. Before the state formally opens, we will be holding a one-day symposium on the 22nd March titled CONTESTED LAND SPACE PLANET TITLE.

Open Call 1: Symposium Proposals

We would like to invite proposals for ten minute papers or presentations on topics broadly relating to land, state, borders, home, migration, ownership, belonging, and identity.

Proposals should include a 150 word abstract and a 75 word biography.

All speakers selected will be paid a £50 stipend for their contribution.

Email proposals to miriam@generatorprojects.co.uk by midnight on Sunday 25th February.

Open Call 2: Contested Spaces: Rights of Soil

STATE OF PRINT are seeking contributions towards a collective work that will explore the nature of contested spaces – through individual personal experience/narratives. Each submission should include a record of an event or experience of place that references conflict over ownership/or control of space. This could be a site visited for historical interest or a random altercation over a car parking space or long-standing boundary issue regarding a garden fence or access for example. It may also be located within another artwork such as a painting, book, or film. These narratives must of course all be true and verifiable! - Be they serious, significant, petty, bizarre, or simply ludicrous.

The contents of your box* might consist of a single work such as a printed image and accompanying descriptive text or may include a collection or range of items and media such as printed matter (prints, posters, books etc), models, collected site material, textual records or stories, photographs, audio recordings, films or digital compositions on vinyl, disc or memory stick for example. Material can be forwarded physically to State of Print/Contested Spaces Submission box between now and the 14th April by 5pm at Generator Projects during the gallery opening times. Submissions will be added to the exhibition as they are received.

Please note that submissions will not be returned as they may be included in future manifestations of the State of Print events. (unless specifically requested)

* STATE OF PRINT will supply the boxes.

Guidelines

Submitted works:
- May include printed works on paper including folded or constructed
- Must fit into the box dimensions –302 mm L x 215mm x 75mm
- Must include co-ordinates and three words in relation to location
- May include a short (or extended) text or narrative in support of the image
- May include samples or models in 3d
- May include sound or film recordings
Each of these boxes will be exhibited on a series of shelves and/or tables that can be handled and investigated by visitors (under strict state regulations of course!). The collective work is intended to reference aspects of location, territory and the organisation of the deeds of ownership and rights of soil – Jus soli and Jus sanguinis.

Open Call 3: Opening Night Performances

State of Print will be at Generator Projects between the 23rd March and 14th April. The exhibition is a collaboration between four artists based in Scotland and Ireland (Paul Harrison, Scott Hudson, Catherine Hehir and Noelle Noonan) in the form of a collective/iterative exhibition and series of events exploring print practices and the role that these have played in establishing structures of 'State'. The project has been hosted in various cities, including here in Dundee (DCA), Cork, Limerick, Barcelona, Santander and most recently in Bristol as a key feature (Keynote) of the IMPACT International Printmaking Conference hosted by the Centre for print Research at UWE.
We are now bringing the project back to Dundee for a final event (in its current form).
