Accessibility

 Our Accessibility Policy

Generator is committed to ongoing efforts to improve accessibility for all of our exhibitions, projects and events. We acknowledge that this is a work in progress.

We are committed to supporting our audiences and those we work with to the best of our abilities.

In addition to striving to ensure accessibility for audiences, we will adjust our working practices in accordance with exhibiting artists/performers/speakers’ access needs to ensure we create an accommodating working environment for all.

We recognise that our practices still do not encompass all access needs. If you face any difficulties in accessing Generator or our programme please contact us at access@generatorprojects.co.uk

The building

Wheelchair accessibility

Generator is a wheelchair-accessible space. The outdoor space, community space and galleries are all on one level, with even ground and doorways at least 1m wide. Care is taken to ensure space for wheelchairs to manoeuvre around exhibitions. There are no internal doors, other than to the toilet.

If you are visiting by wheelchair, please note that from the Perth Road there is a fairly steep incline on the approaching street (Mid Wynd). You may prefer to approach downhill from Hawkhill.

The archive is stored upstairs on a mezzanine level and is not wheelchair accessible, but if you would like to view our archival materials we can bring the boxes down for you.

Signage

The galleries, archive, shop and toilet are all clearly marked.

Parking

We have space for three cars to park outside of our unit, and there is other parking nearby. We do not have any designated disabled parking but we can reserve a parking space if requested by emailing us at mail@generatorprojects.co.uk.

Air quality

Masking is not required in Generator, but to improve respiratory safety there are two Hoover H-PURIFIER 500 HHP50C001 air purifiers, one in each half of the building. These are triple filter (including HEPA H13) purifiers that clear the air to a standard of 330 CADR.

Toilet

There is a single, gender neutral toilet with free sanitary products. The toilet is wheelchair-accessible with a red cord alarm system, but unfortunately does not have a hoist or a Changing Place.

Seating

Where possible there is comfortable seating in both galleries and in the Community Space.

Children

Children are welcome anywhere in Generator, as long as they are accompanied by an adult. Children over 12 may visit without adult supervision provided they are responsible. There is a baby-changing station that can be wheeled into the toilet. Breastfeeding is welcomed anywhere in the space. We have a microwave that can be used to heat baby milk or food - just ask.

Temperature

Unfortunately due to the nature of our lease and the building, we cannot install central heating or insulation in Generator and as a result, the space is often quite cold. We are hoping to buy newer, more efficient heaters in 2023 to make the space warmer.

Water

Free drinking water is always available from our kitchen area - just ask.

Exhibitions, Projects and Events

Audio description

Where possible there will be an audio description of all installed works, created in collaboration with the artists. This will be available on our website and on a media player in the galleries.

All audiovisual works containing spoken text will be subtitled and where possible, a transcript will be available.

Interpretation

If you require a BSL interpreter for an event please email us at mail@generatorprojects.co.uk and we will arrange this.

Content Warnings

All works with flashing/strobing imagery, sudden/loud sounds or strong smells will be labelled with a warning. Works of a sensitive nature will carry content/trigger warnings. These warnings will be shared on our website listings.

Gallery Text

Project texts will be printed in at least 12pt font, in black sans serif text on coloured paper. A large print version will be available.

Where possible an audio version and a Read Aloud version of project texts will be recorded and shared on our website. The audio version will also be available on a media player in the galleries.

Project text and exhibition labels will be at a wheelchair accessible height.

Social Media

All social media image posts will have alt text/image descriptions.

Quiet Days and Relaxed Days

Where possible, exhibitions that are part of our funded programme will have at least one Quiet Day where there is no loud audio, bright or flashing lights and numbers of people in the gallery are limited.

There will also be at least one Relaxed Day, where possible, per exhibition that is part of the funded programme. This is to enable audiences with young children and those sensory needs or learning disabilities that make being quiet difficult to enjoy our programming.

Details of Quiet and Relaxed Days will be shared on our website calendar and on social media.

Times

To enable people with caring responsibilities who cannot access our galleries during the day, where possible each exhibition in our funded programme will have at least one evening opening.

Every effort will be made to make sure events run to time, as we acknowledge that many people with caring responsibilities, mental health conditions and cognitive impairments need things to end at their proper advertised time.

Supporting people we work with

Generator is committed to programming fairly & without discrimination. We recognise that there are barriers preventing creative practitioners, performers and speakers who experience marginalisation from fully participating in the arts, and we try to be mindful of this in our programming.

Actions we are taking to diversify and make our programming more accessible and inclusive include:

Access Fund

We have an access budget in place to lessen the burden for creative practitioners, performers and speakers who would otherwise face barriers to participation in the programme due to e.g. caring responsibilities or disability. Contact us at access@generatorprojects.co.uk for more info.

Artist Selection

We have an active commitment to seeking proposals from marginalised creative practitioners, performers and speakers through open calls and invitations. Open calls are shared widely and we accept non-traditional formats for applications and proposals.

Payment

We are transparent about payment upfront and pay Scottish Artist Union rates to ensure that people from precarious and low socioeconomic backgrounds have a fair chance to participate in our programming.
