Katherine Murphy (Chairperson):
I am truly honoured to continue serving on the Board of Generator Projects, driven by my deep affection for Dundee and my formative experiences at Generator Projects. As a working-class feminist, Independent Curator and Producer based in Scotland, I have worked on significant commissions with renowned Scottish and international art-led institutions, art festivals, museums, and galleries. My practice is grounded in care and aligned with Generator Projects' ethos of close collaboration with artists and contributors to produce meaningful work. I am committed to supporting the committee through open and honest dialogue, sharing both successes and failures to foster a culture of transparency. By encouraging challenging conversations and developing sustainable accessible working methods, I aim to enhance the organisation and create better working conditions for all. I look forward to the valuable experience of working with the Committee and the Board to continue to make Generator a space at the heart of Dundee's creative artist-run community.
Catriona Whiteford (Chairperson)
Who am I
I am a curator, artist and writer based in London. I currently work in the curatorial team at Hayward Gallery Touring working on exhibitions including British Art Show 9 and hold a B.A. Honours Fine Art and MFA from DJCAD. I have held positions with leading national and international institutions Tate Modern & Tate Britain, Freelands Foundation, Stills (Scotland’s Centre for Photography) and the National Galleries of Scotland and I specialise in multidisciplinary programming that has a genre-fluid and collaborative foundation that responds to social, political and civic environments. Equality, anti-racism, social justice and accessibility are central to my work.
Why have I joined and what I will bring?
As an artist and curator I hold a unique position within the sector allowing me to use my experience and understanding of the issues facing artists in the UK and the international arts sector more broadly and applying them to my work in supporting artist development and making systemic changes within institutions to address issues of care, access and equity. GENERATOR is close to my heart as an organisation that was there at the beginning of my career and therefore I am interested in investing my time, knowledge and expertise to work closely with the Committee and other Board members to support the organisation’s transition. In doing so I would bring my experience, networks and advocacy for Generator to the role.
Alison Scott (Secretary)
I’m an artist, writer and art-worker. You might know me from time working in (many of!) Dundee’s art institutions, and I was previously a Generator committee member from 2015 to 2017. I’ve recently started a PhD studentship with Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen, and also work on projects collaboratively in film, sound, publishing and discursive/ research-led practices. I’m especially interested in how art-work interacts with civic issues, environmental and social politics.
I’m passionate about improving access to the arts and the working conditions of artists and precarious workers. Generator represents to me a vital space in Dundee where creative risks can be taken and cooperative, experimental ways of working developed. I’m keen that the board can support this ethos and help to make Generator more sustainable at a time of major challenges.
Shelley Barclay (Treasurer)
Who am I and what I do
I lead on fundraising and development at DCA, and previously worked with a-n The Artists Information Company and Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art. It’s particularly important to me that there is access to contemporary arts in Dundee for free. I’m interested in how we can make arts spaces more inclusive and welcoming to all, and provide supportive environments for artists to experiment and create new work.
Why I have joined the Board
I moved to Dundee in 2020 from Newcastle and since then I have been keen to find ways to support the local arts community. I see the important role Generator plays supporting artists, providing opportunities to showcase work, and promoting engagement with contemporary art in Dundee, and I’m delighted to be involved.
I am particularly interested in how the board can help build organizational memory which perseveres past each committee, help ensure the committee is able to work in sustainable ways, and ensure Generator has longer term financial resilience and stability.
Judit Bodor (Board member)
Who Am I?
I am a curator and creative producer based between Glasgow and Dundee and working as the Programme Director of the MFA in Curatorial Practice (Art&Design) at DJCAD, University of Dundee. I have been working internationally since 2000 in artist archives, artist-led organisations, artist studios, art schools, and as a freelance curator. My work is often research-driven, exploring counter-narratives in art and culture and the work of artists practising and surviving on the fringes of the art world. I am a performance curator and commissioning curator developing work with artists across different platforms and contexts. My writings have been published by Palgrave MacMillan, Taylor & Francis, Routledge, Brill, Transcript Verlag, Occasional Papers, and Apparatus Journal. My interest in being a Trustee of Generator Projects is my belief in peer-to-peer artist networks and the significance of artist-led organisations in providing context for continuing professional development beyond academic structures. As a Trustee, I advocate for Generator and offer my knowledge and experience to support the Committee in building a resilient organisation that is able to cope with the current challenges of the (art) world.
Katie McGroarty (she/her) (Board Liaison)
I’m originally from the west coast, although went to Edinburgh for my undergraduate degree in Intermedia, graduated from the Edinburgh College of Art in 2020, was part of a few committees including Alt-D the 2020 ECA Alternative Degree Show as well as University of Edinburgh’s original Tackling Elitism committee, before coming to Dundee to do my MFA in Art and Humanities at DJCAD in 2021 where I fell in love with Dundee. I am also a Community Development worker for the Stobswell Forum, and am the founder and sole-runner of the Dundee Artists Database. I joined the operational committee in November of 2023, since then I’ve been involved in the Community Space, our Library, and other projects including publications and clothes and toys drives.
I joined Generator because I wanted to be part of the cultural footprint of Dundee in a meaningful way and help artists find work that would be a springboard for their practice and maintain the ever-changing cultural landscape of Scotland. I’m also passionate about platforming working class artists, and making sure working class people have access to free art spaces and multiple perspectives on art, social issues and curation. A totally free, grass-roots, radical committee sounded like a fantastic way to do that. Although I am on the committee, I am technically also on the board of trustees as the Board Liaison. As Board Liaison I have the unique position of being in the operational committee and the board simultaneously. I get the best of both worlds and really enjoy being involved on both sides of the Generator ecosystem, as well as sometimes also being the bridge in between. This is still a new role for me, and I know I have Miriam’s big boots to fill, but I’m excited to see what we can make happen together, and excited for the future of Generator.
