A Description of the Visible brings together two artists that explore ideas of meaning and knowledge, how images and objects are understood and organised, and what structures determine this meaning.

Daniel Twist questions relationships between images and context through the creation of books, binding incidental observations, discoveries, and materials together to form narratives. Each of his publications are reflections on how information is discovered and understood and are attempts to direct and manage knowledge, causing the viewer to reflect on the nature of research and learning.

Miriam Mallalieu’s sculptures also explore the organisation of knowledge. She questions the structures and hierarchies that determine how things are understood, and the power that lies within the notion of Order. Mallalieu’s work explores the conflict within organisation: to order things in one way is to disorder them in another.

Daniel Twist graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in 2018 and will be exhibiting shortly at the RSA:NC. He is also artist-in-resident at Embassy Gallery in Edinburgh.

Miriam Mallalieu recently started a practice-based PhD at Duncan of Jordonstone. She has won several prizes for her artwork including the John Kinross Scholarship (2017), RSA Prize and Watters Maclane Medal (2013) from The Royal Scottish Academy. She has exhibited frequently in Scotland, most notably at Hidden Door, Edinburgh (2013-17), and internationally in Europe and the US.
Mallalieu’s work in this exhibition has been made possible with the financial assistance of the Visual Artist and Craft Maker Awards: Dundee.
