Collective Space is Generator Projects’ new multi-functional artist hub space by Henri Meadows and Dean Crawford. Meadows and Crawford were commissioned to transform the interior architecture and re-design the former Generator Member’s Space adjacent to the main exhibition spaces, based at the Mid Wynd Industrial Unit.
Generator has extensively considered its role within Dundee’s infrastructure and cultural landscape. A vital element of the project was to re-establish collective ownership of the space, creating an inclusive and artist-led hub for anyone to use.
The space has been designed to host talks, screenings and workshops. It will function as an office, kitchen and public workspace, with access to Generator’s archive, library and a selection of contemporary publications.
Meadows and Crawford have responded to socio-cultural understandings of the built environment and how it can influence personal and collective experience, demonstrating an ethic for spatial practice and a concern for holistic design. A main consideration of the work is the versatility of the space, whilst also paying due attention to its practical application by creating an environment that is warm and introduces natural light into the interior.
Meadows and Crawford are currently based in the UK and their collaborations have included a site/exhibition-responsive installation at BALTIC 39 (Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK), architectural sculpture, and theatre-set design.
